Crèches take care of children in a way their parents aren’t able to. Parents typically earn less than $2 a day for hard physical labor. They face illness, accident, monsoon rains, crippling debt, loss of spouse, inadequate housing, a bad diet and not enough to eat. They are illiterate and low caste or no caste.
Up to nine hours a day, six days a week, eleven months a year, they rely on the crèches to give their children…
- Food — two nutritious meals and a snack
- Safety — children aren’t on the streets or home alone
- Education — a sound pre-school curriculum in a Montessori-type setting
- Health Care — weekly monitoring by a nurse with referrals to physicians as needed
- Uniforms and sandals
- A childhood — the opportunity to grow and develop as children are meant to
It’s all free. The crèches give children hope for a better future–and the basic tools to achieve it.
YOU CAN GIVE A CRECHE CHILD A BETTER FUTURE.
$27 per month or $320 a year.
Meet Jeniliya and Kannan, Crèche Children
Jeniliya is the youngest of three sisters. They lost their father and hut in the flooding last December. The family moved into the village to stay with friends. Her mother works in a tea shop. Jeniliya has a very hard life but her sisters are still in school and her mother is very healthy. The crèche supports the family.
There are nine children in Kannan’s family. His mother and her sisters began working when they were six years old and married very young. Kannan is five years old and goes to crèche regularly. There is no food in his house and he loves the crèche food. He is a hero at the crèche because he is good at everything–dancing, writing and reading.
Thanks to the St. Johnsbury Academy, VT, students for collecting stories of crèche children during their April 2016 trip to the crèches .
Please note: BET does not have the resources to connect child sponsors with specific children as other organizations do. If this is a condition of sponsorship for you, please contact email@example.com. HKI friends traveling to the creches are often willing to make the connection for us.
